Stunning Sash Window Restoration in Claverley

Sash windows are a fine example of simplicity and elegance, however, like all things, time, neglect, and weather take their toll. Our passion and knowledge for the craft allow us to carefully utilise innovative hardware and modern techniques to restore and repair all aspects of deteriorated sash windows, ensuring a modernised practicality with an original aesthetic. Let our time experienced craftsmen give your sash windows a new lease of life.

The Method

Our Method

  • Beading is carefully dismantled and cords are cut, allowing the sashes to be removed.

  • The frame and sashes are now inspected and all rotten timber, broken glass, and loose putty are renewed.

  • The pulleys and hardware are serviced and the cords replaced. The sashes are weighed and correctly balanced.

  • The frame is now primed, as standard, and top coated if required.

  • Sashes are now re-hung and insulating beading is precisely mitred and installed.

  • The sashes are tested for perfect balance, locking, and draught exclusion, and any new furnishings or fixings are installed.

Draught Proofing

The most common complaint we receive for an neglected sash window is the considerable draught and rattle. The gaps between the beading and sashes on one window allow enough air to flow through to fail a modern building’s environmental performance certificate. We tackle this by installing a traditional staff-and-parting bead with a hidden 3mm-brush pile that faces the sashes, as well as the same brush pile along the transoms where the two sashes meet. The constant contact between the pile and the sashes guarantees that the window will have no draught or rattle, as well as offering a premium feel when operating the sashes.

Practical, Quality Hardware

More often than not, a neglected sash window has its hardware and furniture painted over, which especially affects the pulley’s functionality. As we offer flexible packages, subject to survey, we can service any original hardware. However, if required or desired, we can work with closely with our suppliers to offer new, innovative hardware and furniture in a range of styles and finishes, all with a 20-year guarantee. Your cord is replaced as standard, (as the common wax cord is susceptible to snapping) with a cleanable, stretched nylon version that is tested before dispatch from our supplier. This ensures durability year after year and promotes smooth running.

Sill and Rot Repair

The sill is the most important component of any window. Without the correct weather seal, or proper maintenance, the sill will dampen and rot and, in serious cases, compromise the integrity of the frame. Our surveyors thoroughly inspect your sills as well as the window jams. Commonly, we strip back the affected areas to the dry, sound timber, and treat it with our specialist resin, which halts any potential threat of rot resurfacing. Finally, we then splice in new hardwood and seal all cracks and joints to ensure that your window is back to a stable, weather-proof condition for the foreseeable future. In serious cases, we reconstruct entirely new sills and lower boxes.

Expert Glass Solutions

The windows you have are probably decades old, so it's not surprising to find a few cracks here and there. Here at William Richards, we are proud to offer an array of glazing options to suit your desired end result and budget, including:

Expert Glass Solutions

  • Replacing broken glass with a standard float that matches the original thickness.

  • In cases where imperfect 2mm crown glass has been broken, we can obtain the modern equivalent from one of the only UK suppliers.

  • To maximise energy efficiency, we can entirely re-glaze your windows with Pilkington K glass, the original hard-coated, pyrolytic, low-emissivity-coated thermal glass.

  • Our 100-micron safety and security window film stops 99% of harmful UV, which dramatically decreases the chance of fading and increases security and safety.

Professional Painting Services

If our painting services are required, we strip the frame and sashes of all loose paint, gradually sand the area down to a 180-grit finish, and then apply acrylic primer and undercoats. We then apply the water-based top coats in the finish and colour you request. Our water-based top coat is environmentally sustainable, fast drying, and non-yellowing, leaving your windows with a premium, durable finish without harming the environment.
